Dr Sampurnanand Sports Complex

The redevelopment of the Dr. Sampurnanand Sports Stadium in Sigra is a flagship project of the Varanasi Smart City Mission. Recently inaugurated in October 2024, the stadium has been transformed from a traditional ground into a world-class, multi-level sports complex designed to serve as a regional hub for athletes in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The project, executed with a total budget of approximately ₹289.78 crore across three phases, focuses on international-standard infrastructure and sustainable "green building" design.

Indoor Sports and Facilities

A major highlight of the redevelopment is the massive multi-level indoor complex spanning 150,000 square feet, which now houses facilities that were previously unavailable in the region.

• Combat and Racquet Sports: The facility includes 10 badminton courts, 4 squash courts, and dedicated zones for boxing, wrestling, judo, karate, and taekwondo.
• Table and Board Games: There are 20 table tennis tables and 4 professional billiards tables available for practice and competitions.
• Aquatics Center: The complex features a covered Olympic-sized swimming pool along with a separate warm-up pool, supported by a 2,000-capacity spectator gallery.
• Ancillary Amenities: To support a professional training environment, the building includes a high-end gym, a sports library, a banquet hall, and a cafe/lounge area.

Outdoor and Smart Infrastructure

The external campus has been redesigned to be a "Smart Campus," integrating modern technology with traditional sports fields.

• Smart Connectivity: The entire 16-acre campus is equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) connectivity, and an advanced CCTV surveillance system integrated with the Kashi Integrated Command and Control Centre.
• Sustainability Features: The stadium is a GRIHA-rated green building featuring an on-site sewage treatment plant (STP) for water recycling and 110kW solar energy panels to reduce its carbon footprint.
• Inclusive Design: The complex is fully barrier-free, incorporating ramps and lifts to ensure accessibility for Para-athletes and visitors with disabilities.
• Commercial Hub: To ensure financial sustainability, the complex includes space for food courts, retail shops, and an anchor sports store (with brands like Decathlon invited to set up).

Visitor and Athlete Information

• Location: Situated in the heart of the city in the Sigra area, making it easily accessible for local residents and visiting teams.
• Accommodation: The redevelopment includes a dedicated sports hostel and dormitory facilities to accommodate visiting athletes during national or international tournaments.
• Parking: A large basement parking facility has been constructed to handle the high footfall during major sporting events.
